DoD releases new BAH rates each December, effective January 1. 2026 rates increased an average of 4.2% following back-to-back 5.4% increases in 2024 and 2025.
If rates decrease, you keep the higher rate as long as your duty station, pay grade, and dependency status stay the same.
BAH is based on your duty station ZIP — not your home. If you commute from a cheaper area, you still receive the duty station rate.
BAH is a non-taxable allowance. It doesn't count as income for federal or state taxes — making it more valuable than equivalent taxable pay.
